Book Cover Connection

So, I was staring at the cover recently and I noticed it was a Ferris wheel. Shocking. I know. However, as I was reading about Four's major fear of heights, it dawned on me that the Ferris wheel on the cover of the book probably symbolizes the wheel mentioned in Divergent. In Divergent, Four climbed a Ferris wheel with Tris in order to get a better view of their surroundings for capture the flag. In the scene, Four was facing one of his worst fears: heights. The wheel on the cover of the book helps establish Tobias's other name of Four. The name Four symbolizes Tobias's 4 major fear. A Ferris wheel symbolizes Tobias's fears, and in a way, it symbolizes Tobias's itself.

It occurred to me that I could add a link to the Ferris wheel scene in the movie Divergent. Technology nowadays

  1. This isn't related to the Book Cover at all but...I don't want to start a new post so...
What do ya know? Evelyn Eaton was the person who wrote the note to Tobias. To me, there was not a lot of mystery or surprise when the note was left for Tobias. However, as soon as he deciphered the clues of the note, Tobias instantly thought "And there's only one person in the world who would know all that information: Marcus" (146). It seemed more obvious that Evelyn would know all of the information. Marcus may have known the time Evelyn died and the place where Tobias first jumped, but he definitely would not know the day Tobias hated the most. Marcus did not really care for Tobias when he was home and surely did not notice his attitude to Wednesdays. Tobias should have known this when he read the note.
Tobias even stated earlier in the book that he thought he saw a figure pass on a train that clearly resembled his mother (118). Also, soon after receiving the note, Tobias state how observant Evelyn was (147). Observant people tend to notice things about other people like what day they hated the most...just saying. But no. It's fine Tobias. You can just overlook this major event in your life, finding out your mother is alive. For such a smart boy, one would have thought he would've figured it out...
I also did not like how Roth did not add much of a surprise when Evelyn was revealed to be the one waiting on the platform for Tobias. After all of the "suspense" of not initially seeing anyone on the platform and how Tobias was expecting his living father and not his dead mother, I was expecting more. Roth kind of just made Tobias's reactions/thoughts in the scene to be "Hmmm...no one is on the platform like the letter said. Oh wait. Jk. My dead mother is here. It's cool."
This is not as powerful of a scene Roth as it should've been. Tsk tsk

  2. I wonder what the real reason Four declined to continue to practice to become a faction leader. He claimed it was because "the pressure was too much for him." But obviously that is a lie. He didn't seem like he was feeling too pressured before Max came and talked to him. I thought at first Four quit because he didn't want to deal with Eric anymore. However, Four wouldn't want to run away from another person in addition to his father. So after reading on, I believe Four is preparing for the future. Later on in the reading, Four sends a note to his mother telling her "Someday. Not yet." Four, a boy of many words, is responding back to Evelyn stating that he will join her and the factionless someday, when he is ready. Four must know that he will not be able to leave his faction that easily if he were a faction leader. In results, he decided to quit his pursuits to becoming a leader and resign to initiation instructor.

Another possibly solution to why Four backed away from the leadership position because he senses that he will be trapped in the faction. Evelyn warned Four that Jeanine and other faction leaders were looking for young new pawns in order to control. Four may not have seemed to at first, however, he agrees with Evelyn's suspicions. In results, he declined the job offering as leader.
It's probably a combination of everything why Four declined the offer...probably
